Originally formed in 1982, “The Retreads” have
quite a history. Pat Pfeifer and Keith Selin met at the University
of Idaho after pledging the ATO house. Soon, they realized
they were both marginal musicians and decided to form a band
for a little extra money and free beer…what a concept!
The band was dubbed “Fourplay” and two other
original members were brought in from the Delta house. After
playing in and around Moscow/Pullman they started to get
quite a following. Soon though, the amazing guitar
player, Ric Green, was getting more interested in computers
than music, and the drummer had a tendency to pass out mid-song
during gigs. This didn’t seem to be working.
Then, one infamous night, Pat and Keith crashed a Fiji house
party and saw our future. Trent Hill playing guitar (wearing
leg warmers on his arms) and Jimmy “Jiz” Heberer
on the drums. As Pat and Keith stood in the back with their
arms crossed (a common competing band practice), they needed
to get these guys into their band. After all, “Fourplay” was
a better band name than “The Mortifiers”.
After some negotiation over many pounders of Rainer, “Fourplay” was
official. Along with our 5th member and lightman, beer provider,
Eddie Hult, we put together press kits, hit the UofI and
WSU campuses and basically played everywhere in the Northwest
for the next couple of years. Not only did it help pay our
way through college but kept us extremely busy. Playing almost
every weekend at clubs, dorms, and the Greek system. Even
ventures down to the former Slavey’s now called the
Roosevelt in Ketchum.
Well, all good things come to and end and eventually, we
all graduated and moved on in the world. But, not without
reuniting over the years for various functions. Some, with
some meaning, Pat’s wedding and Trent’s wedding.
Other times just for no reason at all except for the beer
and friendship.
After many years in various parts of the country, the members of Fourplay migrated to the Boise area. With everyone expressing an interest in playing again, they decided to form a new group and the Retreads was born.
To begin filling the new band roster, Pat posted a drummer wanted ad on craigslist and we had a response within 2 hours, Tod Guthrie. The word of the day was serendipity. He , like us, had not played in quite a while but was the perfect fit. We played for the last couple of years at bunch of gigs and at the end of the 2008 season Keith left the band to pursue his love of Indie music. Soon after, through a guitar purchase on Craigslist, Pat met JD. They arrranged a jam session.
When the band first met JD he was playing in another working band. Just for fun we jammed and at the end of the session JD said he was available. We jumped at the opportunity and the band was again complete. A perfect fit for the direction we wanted to go as a band.
Keith is still around and fills in for the band once in while so we get to play the older set lists as well as the new lists.
For the Retreads, music is a creative outlet and something we all enjoy. Hope to see you soon at a gig and we look forward to sharing the music with Boise and beyond.
